GET IT TOGETHER!

Being organized is one of the hardest things for creative people.  Whether it's keeping your desk clean, your car picked up, or leaving time for coffee on the way to a shoot, the struggle is so real.

With all the stresses of video production, it's no wonder why things sometimes get forgotton, lost, or misplaced.  Here's a couple tips to help you organize your production life and get that next film project flowing smmooothly.

TIP 1: HAVE A LIST

You know how when you go to the grocery store, you take a list a long to make sure you don't forget anything?  We do that because food is important and the list thing works.  Why would you think any different for your production?

Make a list of all the things you need to take along with you and mark things off as you pack them.  You'll be surprised at what you forget sometimes!

TIP 2: KNOW YOUR EQUIPMENT

It sounds like standard "Mom Advice" but you should probably read your camera's manual.  Being familiar with your equipment will do nothing but help you in the long run.  Even if you think you know everything about your camera, maybe give it a glance to see if you're right.

When the talent is late, the producer is angry, and the coffee is non-existant, being familiar with your camera, audio gear, or whatever your job entails is going to let you think less about the tech side of things and more about how to solve the other problems on set.

TIP 3: HAVE A MEDIA/POWER SYSTEM

There's nothing more frustrating then looking for a charged battery in a pile of dead batteries.  It looks unprofessional, wastes time, and you feel like an idiot for not having a system.

Have a system.

It honestly doesn't matter what it is.  Figure out some way to make sure you know which batteries are good, and which are bad.

Same goes for media.  You never want to format a card that hasn't been dumped, right?

Have a system.

We have a super slick way to keep your batteries and media separate and safe during shoots, check it out, below!

TIP 4: GIVE YOURSELF ENOUGH TIME

Do you think that interview will take an hour?
Nope.  It might take half a day.  You should plan for that.

What about that dialogue scene?  It's just 3 people talking, right?
Those take for freaking ever to shoot.  You should plan for that.

The more time you give yourself, the less stressed you'll be.  Overestimate the time it will take, and you might just be cookin' right along and have some time to go get coffee.  Everybody feels better when things are ahead of schedule.

TIP 5: BE FLEXIBLE

Let's be real here.  You're making a movie.  Your job, no matter how stressful it might seem in the moment, is kind of awesome. Give people slack, stay calm, and remember that at the end of the day, even if it all goes down hill, you can go to Denny's and have a grand slam breakfast.  And that's really what it's all about anyway, right?
